Family Fitness Night is Friday at Liberty school

Family Fitness Night presented by the Liberty Elementary PTC is Friday, Feb. 24, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Liberty Elementary School, 2345 Liberty St. SW.

The free event features games, door prizes and snacks.

Among the events:

  • Instructor-led classes (Kids Move & Groove, Zumba, Disney Dance) led by instructors from Mid-Valley YMCA.
  • Inflatable Bounce House
  • Wii Sports game room
  • Relay races

In addition to the activities there will be healthy snack options provided.  Thirty single-day passes to the YMCA will be offered as door prizes.  There will also be a drawing for a 3-month family membership to the YMCA.

O'Bryan resigns from School Board

From Albany School District

School Board Member Bill O’Bryan resigned from the School Board, citing health reasons. He was elected to the Board in May of 2009 to an at-large position and had 17 months remaining on his term.

Superintendent Maria Delapoer praised Mr. O’Bryan for his many contributions to the school district including helping to pass the $55 million school bond and development of the Vision of Success Goals which helped define the long term direction of the district.

Central teacher Gullickson LEGO's 'Featured Teacher'

LEGO Education named Mark Gullickson of Central Elementary School in Albany the Featured Teacher for February.

Gullickson teaches fifth grade and advises LEGO robotics teams.

Teams from Central did well at the Albany Regional First LEGO League Qualifying Tournament held Dec. 10.

Central Linn sending students home early

Central Linn School District plans to release students from school early Thursday due to high water.

Elementary gets out at 2 p.m.  High School gets out at 2:15 p.m. 

Parents are welcome to pickup students prior to release time. the district said.

'An Evening of Pageantry' Nov. 29

Oregon State University presents a fall performance of three ensembles from the band program, titled “An Evening of Pageantry,” on Tuesday, November 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the LaSells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26th Street.

Performing will be the Campus Band, directed by Robert Brudvig; Chamber Winds, directed by Christopher Chapman; and Wind Symphony, directed by Jason Silveira.

Two graduate students will share the baton with Brudvig for the Campus Band. Timothy Wilcox will conduct “Chant and Jubilo” by W. Francis McBeth and Paul Dunsmoor will conduct “Three London Miniatures” by Mark Camphouse. Campus Band will also perform “Flourish for Wind Band” by Ralph Vaughan Williams and a Frank Ticheli setting of “Amazing Grace.”

Schools to observe International Walk and Bike to School Day

October 5 is International Walk and Bike to School Day.
 
This year, the Greater Albany School District will recognize the day with a group walk or bicycle ride to Lafayette Elementary School.
 
The event will begin at 7:50 a.m. at the Church of Christ Church at the corner of 28th and Madison Street SE in Albany and walk south approximately 3 blocks to Lafayette Elementary School, 3122 Madison Street SE in Albany.
 
School Buses will drop students off at the church as well, so that all of the students have an opportunity to participate. Enrollment of the school is 345 children. Albany Mayor Sharon Konopa plans to participate.

Corvallis-OSU Symphony opens season Oct. 13

The Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra presents its season-opening concert, “Local Virtuosos,” on Tuesday, October 13th at 7:30 p.m. in the LaSells Stewart Center, 875 SW 26th St., Corvallis. Six talented local musicians will be featured as soloists on the program. Maestro Marlan Carlson of Oregon State University will be at the baton.

On this very diverse program, the first half of the concert will open with symphony principals Jill Pauls, flute, and Carol Robe, clarinet, as soloists in Franz Danzi’s “Sinfonia Concertante for Flute, Clarinet and Orchestra.”  Both performers are members of the music faculty at Oregon State University. Pauls is also principal flute of the Oregon Mozart Players, the Eugene Opera Orchestra and is a member of several chamber ensembles. Robe also performs as principal clarinet of the Oregon Mozart Players and the Eugene Opera, and plays clarinet and bass clarinet for  the Portland Opera Orchestra. She is also a frequent performer with the Oregon Symphony.

Next on the program will be the aria “Island Magic” from Leonard Bernstein’s one act opera.
