Retired broadcaster Gerald Gaule relaunches AM 1700/SRN station

Local retired broadcaster Gerald Gaule has re-launched an Old Time Radio/Nostalgic service that is heard on the web and in the Albany area on AM 1700. Syncopated Radio Network plays a wide variety of music from 1898 to 1950 (Jazz, Ragtime, Popular, Standards and more), plus old time radio broadcasts from 1929 to 1962 and the CBS Radio Mystery Theatre from 1974 to 1982. The station is available through AM 1700, Destiny Media and in the future will webcast over Live365.com.

AM 1700 is an FCC-approved Part-15 microbroadcaster that operates with less than one-tenth of a watt and serves a portion of southwest Albany and follows strict FCC rules and regulations. It was built with former broadcasting engineers and amateur radio friends. After several months of research, 1700 AM was found to be the best frequency.

SRN has over 14,000 songs and over 12,000 OTR archives and is non-commercial and has no sports or news, just old-time music and nostalgia. It is self-supported. All music royalties and such are paid through registering the Part-15 station to BMI, and most recordings are public domain.

The seven-time Emmy winning "Amazing Race" returns with another compelling and exciting group of racers traveling to faraway places. Among them is Bill and Cathi Alden of Albany; grandparents who have been married for 40 years.

Bill, 63, is a farmer and rancher. Cathi, 62, is a college instructor and retired high school principal.

"The Amazing Race" sends 11 teams on a trek around the world. Each Team is comprised of two people who have a pre-existing relationship with one another.

At every destination, each team competes in a series of challenges — some mental and some physical — and when the tasks have been completed, they learn their next destination. Teams who are farthest behind will gradually be eliminated as the contest progresses, with the first team to arrive at the final destination winning $1 million.

Wildlife area on Yachats River named in honor of Tami Wagner

Wildlife area on Yachats River named in honor of Tami Wagner

The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission has named a 141-acre area long the Yachats River the Tami Wagner Wildlife Area, in memory of a highly regarded ODFW employee who died in a car accident near Toledo last year while on her way to the area.

“This means a lot to us because this was more than just a job to her,” said Tami’s husband, Dave Wagne.

The formerly unnamed area was purchased in the 1970s to provide forage for elk and help alleviate elk damage to surrounding agricultural land.
