From the U.S. Forest Service

Recent storms continue to create hazardous driving conditions on Forest Service roads in the northern section of the Willamette National Forest, particularly in the Opal Creek Scenic Recreation Area.

Public safety concerns have prompted forest engineers to issue a temporary closure of Forest Service Road 2207, which accesses several popular recreation sites, and to perform emergency repairs on Road 2209.

Father accused of injuring twin infant daughters

LYONS, Ore. - A father faces allegations he assaulted his infant twin daughters, fracturing multiple ribs of both girls and causing brain bleeding in one of the girls.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office took Corey Michael Repucci, 22, of Lyons into custody on Friday on charges of Assault 1, two counts Assault 3 and one count Criminal Mistreatment 1.

He was latered released after posting bail.

Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller said he investigation found that Chiara Repucci suffered multiple sub-dermal hematomas (brain bleeding), multiple rib fractures, a fractured right leg and fractured right arm.

She was examined at Santiam Memorial Hospital in Stayton when her parents took her in for breathing problems. She was then transferred to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland.
She has been admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit, and her condition is stable, the sheriff said.

Detectives suspect the brain injuries indicate Chiara was violently shaken and the fractured ribs were caused by blunt force trauma to her body, Mueller said. Further information from physicians is expected later this week.

Flood victims: 'I'm sure she fought for him to the very end'

ALBANY, Ore. - Hundreds of mourners gathered Thursday to remember a mother and son who died when flood waters swept away the car they were in Wednesday.

Catherine McLaughlin, 18, and her 20-month-old son Aiden died when the car got swept out of the Mega Foods parking lot into Periwinkle Creek.

"It's just so young to be gone," said Eleanor Palmtag, a friend of the victims. "Just too young."

Soft candlelight illuminated the the banks of the creek at the vigil Thursday.

The waters have since receded, far different from the raging torrent that washed the car into an underground tunnel.

The driver Christopher Wilgus, 24, and his 5-year-old son Maliki survived. The boy is being treated at OHSU in Portland.

Searchers found Aiden's body at 1 a.m. Thursday.

His mother's body was found later in the day.

At the vigil, mourners said Catherine likely gave her life for her son.

"She wouldn't let him go," Deena Palmtag, a friend of the victims. "I'm sure she fought for him to the very end."

They asked people to keep the survivors in their prayers.

Take health precautions after the flood

From Benton County

The Benton County Health Department is receiving reports of basement flooding in some residences.

Often the source of this flooding is from sewage or combined storm water systems that have become overwhelmed because of regional flooding. It is best to assume that any flood water may contain dangerous bacteria or chemicals. If possible avoid contact with flood water. If you must work in flood waters wear boots, gloves and protective clothing to offer increased protection. Wash with soap and water as soon as possible after exposure to reduce your risk of becoming ill.
